Dave's grandmother, Matilda Erickson, at a young age
Kola church and cemetary Grave of Dave's great grandfather Nils Nilsson

On our last trip to Scandinavia, we made a day trip to Köla from where we were staying in Oslo, Norway. Again, Dave found the gravestone and said a "hello" to his great grandfather, but this was not totally satisfactory to Diana. It appeared that the grave was being maintained and there were flowers growing next to it. There had to be a way to find out more about this man. So, Diana found some other visitors in the churchyard and started asking questions (which all fell on deaf ears) until we were directed to a lady who could speak English and was familiar with the area.

When we explained that we were looking for information regarding Nils Nilsson who was buried here, we knew that we had a problem because the whole churchyard is filled with Nils Nilssons. When we showed the lady the gravestone, she picked up some clues on it regarding the specific locality of where he was from. After conferring with some older gentlemen who were sitting on a bench near by, and after making a short phone call, she asked us if we would like to make a visit to Nils Nilsson's old homestead.

We were soon on our way, following her car, and after a few short miles arrived at the homestead where we were introduced to the occupants. We were served coffee and sweets on the spacious porch and spent about and hour trying to converse with the people there who could not speak English. Lucky for us, the lady from the cemetery stayed with us to help us converse. It was not long before a large book was brought out that had a picture of Dave's great grandfather in it, the first picture of him that Dave had seen. We also found out that the current owner of the homestead is a daughter of one of Nils Nilsson's former servants.
